This time Uqbar’s ~hodzod-walrus will join Neal Davis to discuss Uqbar’s latest developments in building what will be the first Blockchain on Urbit. ~hodzod-walrus will go into Uqbar’s basic outline and how they will make their plans reality. Why their ZK interpreter, Zock, is the perfect form for smart contract integration on Urbit. How they will execute parallel smart contract on Hoon and the endeavours with uHoon.

~hodzod-walrus is a programmer working on Uqbar. Previously he built Pokur as an Urbit Foundation apprenticeship grant. He’s quickly become a Hoon evangelist and hopes to showcase its strengths in the world of smart contracts.

Urbit Meet-Up Stockholm


Quartus Corp's ~rabsef-bicrym will join Neal Davis to discuss his ongoing endeavours to make useful software on Urbit. ~rabsef will explain three visions Quartus has for Urbit’s use - Urbit as Personal Data Assistant, Urbit as Building a Better Syllogism, and Urbit as STEAM Toy.

~rabsef-bicrym is a long-standing member of the ~dalten Collective. His path to Urbit development is non-traditional, coming from the world of the practice of law prior to working on Urbit. Quartus’s products on Urbit include `%gora` and `%crow`. They’ve also submitted several updates to the main code base including, most recently, an update to the ring signature library.

Austin, Texas martians - come hangout and talk Urbit Friday, January 21st at 6:30 pm at Distribution Hall. We will be joined by ~poldec-tonteg, the director of The Combine (the-combine.org), which is the Urbit Foundation's incubator that invests in teams building on Urbit. He will give a presentation around 8pm on The Combine, its purpose and how to get involved as an entrepreneur. It will be followed by a more technical presentation by Edward Amsden (~ritpub-sipsyl), an Urbit kernel developer who is currently rewriting Vere, the Nock run-time environment and Urbit's virtual machine. Team members from many Urbit companies will be in attendance including ~Tirrel, dcSpark, Tlon.io, Urbit Live, Wexpert Systems, Native Planet, and Holium. As many of you know, Urbit runs best when hosted, seeing that it's a server and all. The problem of course is that hosting an Urbit ship isn't the easiest of things to do for most people. Hosting Urbit ships in production is actually pretty tough though—doing it right requires wrangling the complexity of traditional "Earth" infrastructure in addition to a strong sense of how Urbit works.

In this call we're joined by Brendan Hay, the lead behind Tlon Hosting, and Lukas Bühler of UrbitHost, in what's sure to be an entertaining and informative conversation. Bren and Lukas have both been the masterminds behind their respective hosting architectures, and were somewhat surprised to learn that they'd independently settled on highly similar architectures.

This will be an unscripted conversation that's sure to span a gamut of topics including, but not limited to: the unique technical challenges of hosting Urbit ships, the upcoming %khan vane, Kubernetes operators, product roadmaps, custodianship of (or plans to do away with) private keys, and probably a ton more.

ETH Gas prices are too high! The growth of Urbit has been greatly hampered this year by the cost of activating planets. Join Philip Monk (`~wicdev-wisryt`) and the entire L2 team as they present the work completed to date to implement Layer 2 naive rollups. Come see a demo of the new Bridge front end, first migrating a star and spawning some planets, then activating a planet, all on L2.

This call will be a great opportunity for galaxy owners to get their questions answered for the upcoming vote on Layer 2 implementation. Piloting an Urbit ship requires expertise that many lack. To achieve the rich and prosperous ecosystem we've all envisioned requires making that journey easier. In this talk, Hunter Miller introduces a new way for users to join the network with minimal effort.

## Keynote: The Revenge of Teleology

Teleology—or inquiry into ultimate ends—has been out of fashion since the seventeenth century, when Francis Bacon said that, “like a virgin consecrated to God,” it “produces nothing.” I argue that the digital revolution is inverting Bacon’s claim. Baconian instrumentalism is now suffering from diminishing returns—it is what the youth today call a Boomer Ideology. Rather, the greatest gains are going to individuals and communities with teleological attitudes. This talk will observe some examples and present a model consistent with the observations. Bitcoin inquires after the telos of money, the most winning independent “content creators” inquire after the telos of media, and Urbit inquires after the telos of personal computing.

Edward is a software developer and the principal of Black River Software LLC. He has several years experience building both backend and IoT software in Haskell, and in particular building IoT control and software deployment infrastructure. Some exciting work has been going on behind the scenes to provide the foundation for 3rd party software distribution. In this talk Phil (~wicdev-wisryt) and Raghu (~sovmep-ripsum) will discuss the work they've been doing to clay to provide "virtual desks"—an integral part of the infrastructure needed to have safe, generic software distribution.

Raghu is a software engineer at Hudson River Trading who is perhaps best known for his work on ucal, the Urbit calendar application. The work he's doing with Phil on virtual desks is being done through our Scholarships program, in which community developers pair up with Tlon infrastructure engineers to work on infrastructure projects. We'll spend some time at the beginning of the call to introduce Raghu and hear about his experience working on the Urbit kernel.

Urbit provides a powerful and extensible platform for all kinds of app development. It can serve as a general-purpose datastore, decentralized network, and identity solution for a variety of front-end applications. The client that ships with Urbit, Landscape, provides one example of the kind of applications that can be built on the platform. However, other developers can use the same tools used to create Landscape to power their own interfaces and clients for Urbit.

Tyler Brown Cifu Shuster (~radbur-sivmus) has worked with the Landscape team over the past few months to extract these tools into reusable Javascript packages. In this talk, he will explain how to use them to develop a client for Urbit independent of Landscape. He will cover the basic lifecycle of a client and explain how Javascript interface and state frameworks pair with Urbit's data model.

This talk should enable anyone familiar with modern Javascript development and HTTP grammar to build an application on top of Urbit without writing any back-end code

Landscape was an experiment. Now it’s Tlon's flagship client for the Urbit project: a product, a full-stack application, spread across a variety of Gall agents and libraries, lighting the way forward against the dwindling unknowns in the reality of Urbit userspace development and distribution.

Matilde Park, Landscape team lead, talks about the distinctions between the Landscape product and basic Urbit development, and the significance of building Landscape for Tlon — the role of “high-pressure experiments” in forcing our computer toward something rock-hard, diamond-perfect. With a few examples of ongoing deployments, she also outlines the problems being solved right now and the ones still a touch further out.

Urbit engineer Philip Monk will be discussing the solution space to scaling Azimuth, the infrastructure for Urbit ID that's built on Ethereum.

Unless you're living under a rock, you know that Ethereum is thoroughly congested and, as a result the cost of working with it is quite high. Most pertinently for Urbit, this means that the cost of bringing new planets onto the network is unacceptably high.

Phil has been doing a ton of research for the past few months on different approaches to scaling Azimuth. In this talk, he'll lay out the what's been explored so far, the relevant considerations for Urbit, and the emerging solutions that are being pursued.

This week we have ~mastyr-morzod, ~littel-ponnys and ~mastyr-harlud visiting the office. They've all been contributing great stuff from afar, so we figured out how to get them all in the same room to hack on Urbit for the week. On Thursday evening they'll talk about what they've been coming up with.

We'll also spend plenty of time just hanging around and talking about Parity, BCH, and everything else crypto-related. Feel free to bring friends!"

Galen is going to give a short (~20m) talk on designing robust human systems.  No code, no math, no time in the terminal.  This is a completely non-technical talk about design principles.  It was originally given at the IDEO Blueprint event a few weeks ago.

Above all, these meetups are for meeting other people crazy enough to think the internet can be replaced.

Ted, the newest addition to our team, has been working on making changes to %arvo all over the place.  He'll give a short talk about some of his adventures in the Urbit OS and how they're going to make Urbit faster and easier to use.

That, and discussing why Equifax should have never been holding all that customer data in the first place.

One thing that's been keeping us busy over the past month is designing the relationship between Urbit and the Ethereum blockchain.  We'll present our current design for this (from ~8:30 - 9) for people to comment on and ask questions about.

Otherwise, as usual, there will be plenty of time to hang out and chat with other Urbit people.
